Important 2026 update: Afghan applicants now submit German student-visa applications online

Verified on 10 August 2026. The procedure for Afghan applicants seeking a German national visa for study or employment has changed.

What changed?

Since 1 June 2026, future applications for study and employment visas must be prepared through the Federal Foreign Office’s Consular Services Portal. Applicants upload their documents online for an initial completeness check.

After screening, the applicant will either be asked to correct or add documents, or will be allowed to book an in-person appointment.

Where is the appointment?

The visa section of the German Embassy in Kabul remains closed. Afghan applicants can currently submit national visa applications at the Afghanistan Visa Section of the German Embassy in Islamabad.

Official guidance states that applicants only need to travel to Pakistan shortly before a confirmed appointment. At the appointment, originals may be checked, biometric data are collected and the visa fee is paid.
