Studying in Germany: from language level to university application

Studying in Germany starts long before enrolment. International applicants should clarify whether their school qualification permits direct admission, which language level is required and how they will prove sufficient funding.

Check the university entrance qualification

Depending on the country and qualification, direct admission may be possible or a Studienkolleg and assessment examination may be required. The university or responsible evaluation body makes the final decision.

Prove the correct language level

German-taught programmes commonly accept DSH, TestDaF, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, Deutsches Sprachdiplom II or Goethe C2. The university decides which certificate is valid. English-taught programmes normally require proof of English.

Choose the programme and application route

Many universities use uni-assist, while others accept direct applications. Check deadlines, certification requirements, translations, transcripts and any required preliminary review documentation.

Prepare financial proof

Students from third countries must prove that they can cover living costs. For 2026, the official portal states at least €11,904 for a study visa. A recognised scholarship or declaration of commitment may be accepted as an alternative.
