German student visa for Afghan applicants: requirements and 2026 checklist

Afghan citizens generally need a German national visa for university study. The following checklist provides practical orientation for applications in 2026.

1. University admission or application confirmation

For a regular degree programme, admission to a state or state-recognised higher education institution is normally required. In some bachelor cases, an application confirmation may be accepted. The Afghanistan mission guidance generally expects a formal admission letter for master’s and doctoral programmes.

2. School and university records

Prepare school certificates, bachelor’s or master’s degrees, transcripts and relevant employment records. Documents must be complete and may need German or English translations.

3. Language proficiency

The required level depends on the programme. German-taught programmes often require recognised proof such as TestDaF, DSH or telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule. English-taught programmes follow the university’s own rules. The visa process may also require proof of your current proficiency in the language of instruction.

4. Financial resources

For 2026, the official German portal lists at least €11,904 per year as financial proof for a study visa. Common options are a blocked account, scholarship or declaration of commitment. Always confirm the amount immediately before applying.

5. Other important documents

6. Current process for Afghan applicants

The application is prepared online through the Consular Services Portal. The in-person appointment takes place at the Afghanistan Visa Section in Islamabad. Do not travel to Pakistan without a confirmed appointment, and independently check Pakistan’s entry requirements.

7. Processing time and fee

The official Afghanistan page states a national visa fee of €75, payable in Pakistani rupees. Processing may take several months depending on the case, so submit complete documents and plan sufficient time.

This article is not legal advice and does not guarantee a visa. Requirements can change or additional documents may be requested. The Consular Services Portal and the competent German mission are authoritative.
